SERENITY

While much of my early work was inspired by New York City’s urban hustle and bustle, I have lived in rural locations on and off during my life and have never failed to be moved by nature’s treasures. Still, no matter where we live, daily life constantly offers us precious still life meditations. This photograph of my mother’s curtains, taken in 1946, was picked by New York Time’s photo critic Jacob Desshin as his favorite photograph for Popular Photography’s  “Critics Choice”.  His words about it remind me of why I love to photograph.

“During the decade or so that has elapsed since I first saw Harold Feinstein’s window picture, it’s power to move me has never waned.  My original impression of a deeply felt human experience shared spontaneously and completely with the observer, persists to this day. Spelled out, it is a complex of emotional and nostalgic qualities in which each observer may find reflections of himself and his own life experience.”

Each moment we are present with what sits before our eyes, we become allies to life.
