BUTTERFLIES

In my childhood, I remember a teacher commenting on one of my drawings, “Harold, you’re an artist!”

Artist? You mean there’s a word for this? It was a done deal! From then on this was my pursuit in life. I drew and painted almost everything. Then along came photography. Looking into the ground-glass of a Rollieflex, the journey continued until I looked closely at butterflies and the myriad of designs in their wings.

Who of us have not at one time or another gazed at a butterfly with a sense of awe?

In the journey of photographing butterflies, it was not unusual for me to cry out on looking at these creatures, ”Oh my God!” Working on this book has transported me. What is left for me to see? Of course seeing is my occupation and pre-occupation. But does it ever end?

It has been my good fortune to photograph flowers, sea shells, foliage, and many others of the wonders of this planet Earth.

And so, I must again pay homage to this glorious planet.
